Dr. Abbasseh Towfigh has been with the practice since completing her surgical residency in 1993. She brings a unique set of skills to the practice in the areas of podiatric surgery and in the treatment of children and adolescents. She is one of the few podiatrists in the southern California area who speaks several different languages including Spanish, Farsi, Italian and French.
Dr. Towfigh offers intuitive solutions when it comes to podiatric issues for our female patients. She also has a special interest in the area of “plastic” and “cosmetic” surgery having had additional training and emphasis on achieving superior cosmetic results.
Dr. Towfigh devotes much of her free time to nonprofit organizations supporting such issues as human rights violations, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS. You can review the latest segment featuring Dr. Towfigh in a series by NPR called “The Changing Lives of Women”.
Dr. Terry Boykoff is the one of the original founders of the practice. He has been involved in many local, state and national podiatric organizations throughout his career. After 30 years in private practice, Dr. Boykoff enjoys a multi-generational referral base from patients, their families, and referring doctors and their families for their foot and ankle care.
Dr. Boykoff holds a certificate to perform rearfoot and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, but his primary emphasis is on nonsurgical solutions to patients’ foot problems.
Dr. Boykoff’s overwhelming practice philosophy of “surgery as the last resort” permeates the medical practice as a whole. We understand that patients do not want to have surgery, they are simply looking for ways to get rid of their pain. Dr. Boykoff enjoys basketball and golf.
Dr. Mark Wallen has practiced for over 28 years in Santa Monica and has developed a large referral base from local physicians. In 2012, he merged his already successful practice into the Santa Monica Podiatry Group.
Dr. Wallen has considerable experience in treating diabetic and chronic wounds. He is particularly interested in pediatric podiatry (Podopediatrics), treating the wide variety and unique problems of this patient population. Dr. Wallen volunteers for the athletic training department of a prominent local school. Dr. Wallen was born in Toronto and is of course a hockey fan.
Dr. Wallen’s surgical expertise includes the treatment of arthritis of the foot. Maintaining joint motion of the big toe is the goal rather than fusion operation. The CARTIVA ™ implant for degenerative joint arthritis is a revolutionary device and simpler surgical approach to this common ailment. The doctor is experienced in non-surgical MLS laser therapy for nerve problems in the ankle/foot. State-of-the-art biologic injection treatments utilizing PRP (platelet rich plasma), A2M (Alpha-2-macroglobulin) and joint lubricants (Supartz Fx) for various foot/ankle ailments and injuries are available as well.
Dr. David Aungst was hand selected for the practice after completing his surgical residency training program at the Department of Veteran Affairs and Olive View/UCLA Medical Center. He is the current chief of the podiatric section and director of podiatric medical education. He holds academic appointments at several podiatric medical colleges across the country.
Having been a collegiate athlete himself and currently still active in various sports activities, Dr. Aungst enjoys treating patients with athletic injuries. He understands the concerns and needs of athletically oriented patients.
Dr. Gerald Baker joined the practice 10 years ago. He has been a well respected and long-standing practitioner in the Santa Monica area for over 25 years.
Dr. Baker was a past president of the Los Angeles County Podiatric Medical Association. Although surgically trained, he now prefers to specialize in the area of nonsurgical treatment of the foot and ankle. His areas of concentration include palliative care to the senior population, and nonsurgical care for the diabetic population.
In his free time, Dr. Baker has culinary interests and loves to travel.
